Bipolar RF by ELURENA vs. Thermage: Understanding Radiofrequency Skin Tightening
If you have been exploring non-surgical skin tightening, you may have come across Thermage. You may also have seen ELURENA’s V-Shape Platinum Bipolar RF facial service and wondered: are they similar?
They belong to the same broad family of radiofrequency treatments, but they are different systems. Understanding that distinction helps you ask better questions and choose a treatment plan with realistic expectations.
What Do They Have in Common?
Radiofrequency, often shortened to RF, uses electrical energy to generate heat in tissue. In cosmetic skin-tightening applications, controlled heating is used to encourage changes in collagen and improve the appearance of skin firmness over time.
The American Academy of Dermatology describes RF as one of the non-invasive approaches available for modest skin tightening. Results generally develop gradually, and individual responses vary. Learn about non-invasive skin tightening from the AAD.
That shared principle explains why Bipolar RF and Thermage can appear in the same conversation. It does not mean their settings, treatment experience, or results are interchangeable.
What Is Thermage?
Thermage is a branded treatment system from Solta Medical. Its current Thermage FLX platform uses monopolar radiofrequency, with integrated cooling and vibration. The manufacturer describes it as a treatment that supports collagen remodeling for smoother, tighter-looking skin. Explore the official Thermage website.
Thermage refers to a specific device family and treatment, rather than a general name for all RF skin tightening.
What Is ELURENA’s Bipolar RF Service?
At ELURENA Advanced Aesthetic Studio in St. Petersburg, we offer V-Shape Platinum Bipolar RF Skin Tightening & Contouring as a facial service. We also include Bipolar RF in our 2-in-1 Face Lift bundle with 10D HIFU.
Our service is offered under its own name and uses our own treatment platform. It is not a Thermage treatment, and the specifications or published outcomes of Thermage should not be applied to it.
If you are comparing options, ask us about the facial handpiece, selected area, treatment plan, and what is realistic for your goals.

Monopolar and Bipolar: What Is the Difference?
The terms describe the electrode arrangement and the path through which energy is delivered.
In a typical monopolar arrangement, energy travels between an active treatment electrode and a separate return electrode. In a typical bipolar arrangement, energy travels between two nearby electrodes in the treatment applicator.
This distinction matters, but it cannot tell you everything about a treatment. Heating also depends on electrode geometry, device settings, treatment duration, tissue characteristics, and how the device is used. The word “bipolar” alone does not establish a fixed treatment depth or prove that a system is gentler, safer, or more effective.

Which Approach Is Right for You?
A useful comparison starts with your concern. Are you interested in your jawline, lower face, neck, or a broader facial treatment? How much change are you expecting? Do you have a particular event date in mind?
Ask each provider to explain:
- The exact device and handpiece being used.
- The areas included in your appointment.
- The recommended number and timing of sessions.
- Expected discomfort, potential side effects, and aftercare.
- Evidence supporting the proposed treatment and realistic outcomes.
Non-invasive RF treatment can involve discomfort and temporary redness or swelling. Burns and other complications are possible, so suitability assessment and appropriate technique matter. AAD treatment guidance; Thermage safety information.
Non-surgical tightening also produces more modest changes than a surgical lift. It should not be presented as a guaranteed replacement for surgery. AAD guidance on skin tightening.
How Does the ELURENA 2-in-1 Bundle Fit In?
Our 2-in-1 Face Lift — 10D HIFU + Bipolar RF Skin Tightening brings ultrasound and radiofrequency services into one coordinated plan.
HIFU and RF use different forms of energy. During your consultation, we discuss whether both components are appropriate, which areas your selected package covers, and how treatment should be scheduled. Combining them does not automatically double the result or make the bundle equivalent to Thermage.
For clients considering our bundle, the most useful question is what each component contributes to their own treatment plan.
